I have entered this space, not so much to comment on the plaza, but to see if this space provides an opportunity for us to get to know each other better. I would like to see us post information about ourselves in addition to using it to having a dialogue about issues. if others are interested in using it for social purposes as well, please let me know and I will add more info.

There are many strong reasons to remove the ice rink from the Veterans Plaza and build a smaller pavilion. These include:

The existing “green” artificial turf space is approximately 31,000 square feet of unfettered, highly flexible open space that varies from 100 to 150 feet wide and averages about 210 feet in length. The proposed plaza with it’s large roof and rows of trees leaves only about 10,050 square feet of open, unroofed, and un-stepped surface for its main plaza. This main area averages only 40 foot wide (about the length of thre

Having a debate about plans for the CB and VP is fine with me. However, I think a lot of us are engaging in navel gazing and futile debate. The current plans do provide for facilities intended to be used for the public's enjoyment. The Civic Building will be public space. Veteran's Plaza will be public space. The astroturf was intended to be a temporary solution until the project was completed... a project that is long overdue. Once we have a building on that lot with programming to include the…

A rink that small would fail. It is not economically viable. No one wants a failed rink. The economics don't work, its operation would have to be subsidized.
We have investigated artificial turf and there is no product that does not get gross in a year or two if we let people eat on it, chew gum on it, walk their dogs on it, smoke on it, etc. You get the idea. Why would we want our beautiful civic plaza to have fake plastic grass that won't hold up under the use of this public space? G…

Last week I posted (it's under richard jaeggi's name) an opinion piece called "A Plaza for Everyone, Everyday" that described my understanding of the pros and cons of the roofed pavilion and ice rink that dominate the current design for Silver Spring Veterans Plaza. It also listed my suggestions that the ice rink be moved to the open space in front of the proposed future library site, and that the roofed pavilion be made much smaller to open up more of the plaza

I agree with the person who asked why we can't have both. Do we really need to choose one to the exclusion of the other? As I understand it, the rink area could be used for a lot of purposes in the summer, and there would still be green. In the winter, it would keep the area lively. It would be great to have a place to skate in the winter that is closer than Wheaton!

If you care about Silver Spring's only real public place in the downtown then come out to the town meeting on Saturday, May 5 at 1 PM.
Show your colors: Wear Blue if you want Ice. Wear Green if you want Turf. (Wear plaid if you can't decide.)
The people who planned the covered ice-rink and plaza will be on hand to tell you why they think the rink is the best choice. Someone from Park and Planning will be there to tell you why their staff thinks open green space is a bet…

Thanks so much for setting up this service! I hope LOTS of people will post their thoughts and ideas. Here are mine. Full disclosure, I am one of the "random citizens" who posted the 2-question online survey asking what activities people would like to see on the plaza and which of two design schemes they preferred (rink vs. no rink). It's been pretty interesting to see the response to the survey both in terms of numbers of suveys filled out (800+) to the comments we've gotten which have range

I also like the green space and the impromptu activities I see going on there. But in the winter its pretty quiet and an ice rink would be nice. Can the ice rink be covered during the rest of the year and converted back into green space? It's not like this requires growing any actual grass.
After all, sports arenas are often used for ice shows, sporting events and concerts and RFK goes from the soccer field to a baseball diamond over night.

Dear Sirs and Madams:
I
am writing to ask you to please consider the overwhelming "vote with
your feet" campaign that has been the green space in downtown Silver
Spring. What we need is an atmosphere and a welcoming space. The
green space has been amazing - it proves that unstructured space can
bring together all kinds of people and provoke unscripted fun. People
LOVE it. It is a normal place and everyone uses it. I do not want to
see a "Reston Towne Centre" version of Silver Spring. Si…

OK Springsters. We have been waiting for a Town Center, a civic building and a public plaza, for— how long has it been? Eight, ten, twelve years. If you are tired of waiting then stop waiting.
Here is a paradigm shift: The town center starts now, right here. A social networking site where people hold conversations, pontificate from soap boxes, and present visions for the future.
Sure this is just virtual. Nothing like a real town center. But every project is created twice: once…
